DIY: Painted Wing-Back Chairs

We had a good idea of what kind of dining table end chairs we wanted and we couldn’t find them anywhere- at least for the right price. Sorry, I wasn’t going to splurge $800 on one chair. That’s nonsense.

The criteria were that they had to be big, comfy, unique and wing-back. We finally found a set on Craigslist for maybe $100? I can’t remember exactly, it’s been a while! However, I despised the pattern. Like, it made my head dizzy. The goal was to have the chairs reupholstered but like everything else on our home reno/decor checklist, it was going to be a while.

After a year of putting up with the outdated fabric pattern, I did the unthinkable. I painted the chairs!

Below is the before and after. Now, let me explain. I only painted them because I knew we were eventually going to have them reupholstered. So, if I did mess up (because I kind of didn’t know what I was doing- just don’t let the hubs know) it wasn’t the end of the world!

The correct way to do this (I suppose) is to use fabric paint. I didn’t do that. I used regular white wall paint. Yeppp! It didn’t turn out bad. I did two coats of paint allowing the first to completely dry before applying the second one. Once done, the chairs felt like tough vinyl. To made it more comfortable to sit on, I add these IKEA faux sheep rugs on them.

I’m kinda loving how these chairs look now and I might even forget about reupholstering them now! At least for a long long while.

On as side note, these absolutely breathtaking crabapple blossoms are making our dining room so dreamy and whimsical- perfect for Spring! I love any kinds of blossoming branches especially cherry blossoms.

Loving my ‘new’ white wing chairs! In the morning, I use my dining room as my office while sipping my foamy cup of latte which was made with love at my cafe station! In cased you’ve missed it, see my DIY cafe station HERE.

  1. How have the chairs held up? My husband just bought two of this EXACT chair. Same fabric and everything! I’m wanting to paint also, but trying get to decide if I need to add the fabric medium or just do plain old paint.

    1. Hi Sara! This is amazing. The paint is holding up just fine. We do find it a little tough to sit on so we line it with a soft plush rug as shown. If you are not feeling risky, I def. would suggest fabric paint though! Have fun w/ your makeover! – Kellie

  4. Very interesting, I also have a big armchair that is an amazing chair but quite outdated fabric and I’d love to redo it to be more neutral. I’m definitely going to look into fabric paint given how expensive reupholstering is ! 🙂 xx

  7. Love them! Will the paint be prone to crack now or is it just the stiffness that makes the difference between regular paint and fabric paint? After reading this, I’m lining up the painted chair projects in my head:). Thank you!

    1. So far, the paint hasn’t cracked. I’m not sure how it compares to fabric paint though since I haven’t used it! Also, I wouldn’t recommend painting velvet material chairs. I think mine was polyester. Have fun with your projects! xo, Kellie
