DIY: Silk Floral Arrangements

Spring is here and it’s time to play coffee table dress up! What better way to add a bit of freshness, color, and femininity to a space than with some floral arrangements? I know…you were probably thinking of the real deal but wouldn’t you rather have them last forever and ever?! I was never really a huge fan of the ‘fake’ ones, but sometimes when you don’t have the time or energy to replenish your house with fresh flowers, the ‘fake’ ones aren’t so bad.

I was on a mission to find some really nice pre-arranged silk ones. I didn’t ask for much. Just wanted something very simple (same kinds of blooms in one arrangement) in a clear vase with you know that ‘fake’ looking water. Another requirment? I didn’t want to spend an arm and leg for it. Like perhaps, $25 and underrrr? I’m not cheap, I’m practical! A smart lady knows when and where to spend her money. Chanel, please?

Well, lets say I was floored at these ridiculous prices for silk flowers!! Come on, over $80 for one? It’s like, it made no sense. So of course, I had to bring the Martha Stewart out in me. I made my own. It’s really so easy and simple, anyone could do it.

I got two bunches of silk flowers (white peonies & blush ranunculus) from the Christmas Tree Shop for $5/each. Grabbed the Crystal Clear Resin from AC Moore for $10. This is the stuff that will imitate water and help permanently set the arrangement. And I already had extra clear vases so I was good to go. Here’s how I made my two coffee table floral arrangements in 6 short steps:

Step 4 is optional. I find that if I arrange the stems in a criss-cross pattern and tie them together, the arrangement comes out nicer. You can skip this step and add the flowers individually directly into the resin mixture.

Below’s how the resin looks close up- just like water! You don’t need a lot, just enough for the stems to be submerged into the mixture. I used one box for both vases. Once it sets (in 36hrs), it’ll be hard as a rock and help permanently set the arrangement.

Resist the urge to play around with the flowers once the final adjustments are made. It has to be untouched and let rest for 36hrs.

And…if you didn’t believe me about the ridiculous prices of the pre-arranged ones, I found these on online- on sale! I gotta say, mine looks just as nice…

Including the vases, my arrangements probably cost about $15 each plus the cost of labor love. Here are more detailed images of how I styled my coffee table…(because I’m all about pictures!)

  2. I live in a basement apartment so keeping real flowers alive is nearly impossible. I cant wait to make these. I saw some of those square vases at the Thrift Store yesterday. I know what I am doing Friday!

  3. Yeah, I definitely agree that yours look better! There’s a time and a place for real flowers, but when it comes to decorating, I’ll think with flowers that never die. 🙂
